What do the x"s and O’s on a guitar chord chart mean?

I am trying to learn how to play a 6 string guitar. I AM LOST! Please help!

x at the noted spot on the fret chart is where you finger or fret the string. the o would indicate an open string. to achieve the best sound, place your finger directly behind the fret wire. it may hurt a tad more but it also gives you the clearest note and toughens fingers.     X finger down on string. O finger up/open. I think this correct, been a long time for me. The line is the Fret the Brass across the neck.

    x= do not play this string
    O= play this string open (unfretted)

    an x may also mean a mute, but thats in tabelature, not chords.
