I think of the target chord and how many different modes in the different tonal centers (Diatonic, Harmonic minor, melodic minor, melodic major, each with its own set of 7 chords/mode) that can be applied to the target chord. Like the diatonic 2, 3, 6 harmonic 1, 4, melodic minor1, 2, whole half diminished, etc. 
I like the symmetry in the way it almost fills in learning your b3, 3, b6, 6, b7, 7 notes. I play guitar, not piano so patterns/shapes are important to me.</description>
